Catering student selected to receive international bakery bursary

Kate Wright

An amateur chef from Mellor Brook will soon be flying to Switzerland to study at the prestigious Richemont Bakery School, after being awarded a bursary by a group of influential British bakers.

Kate Wright, 49, is currently studying Level 3 in Catering at Blackburn College. The selection process involved an interview by a Liveryman from The Worshipful Company of Bakers, who organises the three-day visit for the most promising bakery students from across the UK.

“To receive this bursary means a great deal. I can’t wait to learn more at a renowned centre of excellence such as the Richemont School, it proves I have the ability,” said Kate.

For the interview Kate made a range of assorted seeded breads and Toscana (almond cake), and clearly impressed David Mizon, the Liveryman judging whether she was suitable for the bursary.

“Kate should be very pleased. For a student to say that they have studied at the Richemont School is a great accolade”, said David.

“It will look outstanding on her CV, and I’m sure she will have a fantastic time over in Switzerland.”

The course will include studying new baking methods and recipes, and a tour of the chocolate shops and bakeries of Lucerne, close to Richemont.

Ian Sutherland, the Tutor who trains Kate, said: “We’re very proud of her. The breads and cakes Kate makes are always of a very high standard.”

“We are so pleased to see the positive impact our teaching and the College’s facilities are having on one of our student’s careers.”

Kate plans on completing her catering course, and hopes to go into teaching catering in the future.

Ian Clinton, College Principal said: “Our catering facilities are amongst the best in the country, with our state-of-the-art Scholar’s Restaurant and production kitchens. It is great to see a student using the facilities to such great effect.”

“We wish Kate all the best on her visit and hope she goes on to have a rewarding and challenging career.”
