Due to changes in government policy and the NHS, the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine has become better recognised and its use has become more widespread across the population. Complementary or Holistic therapists gain employment internationally utilising their practical, consultation and advisory skills within a variety of settings. Within the NHS therapists work in hospitals, GP practices and community centres. Many also work within health spas, private clinics or become self-employed. The programme is suitable for anyone with an interest in the Health sector. Whether they are already working within the NHS as a health trainer, nurse, midwife or physiotherapy assistant, are working within the sports and rehabilitation industry, hospices and palliative care, have completed NVQs in holistics and beauty or want a complete change in career.
This programme of study covers all aspects of the multifaceted role of a Complementary Medicine practitioner from communication skills, practical massage, practice management and reflection on the treatment of real case study clients to enable immediate employment on completion of the course.
The programme includes practical modules such as Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Holistic Massage, Hydrotherapy and Sports and Remedial Massage which lead to additional diplomas from external governing bodies; including the Massage Training Institute, Sports Therapy Organisation, International Federation of Aromatherapists and the Clinical Association of Reflexologists as well as key units such as, Human Physiology and Nutrition. Students will also be able to access National Forums, Special Interest Groups (SIGS) and receive guest lectures from experts in fields such as Ecotherapy, Breathworks, Mindfulness, Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, Stress Management, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy in Pregnancy & Childbirth and Colour Therapy. Educational visits such as retreat centres in Crete, Bath Spa and Aromatherapy Farms in Avignon are planned to enhance the student experience.
In addition, students can gain First Aid at Work and Health & Safety certification. Industrial links are established and encouraged through work based learning; as well as practical sessions in the ‘Academy', the in-college clinic. Other industry recognised qualifications are also offered such as, Indian Head Massage, Thermal Auricular Therapy and Hot Stones Therapy, subject to an additional charge.
