Our Foundation Degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing and is recognised by the Homes and Communities Academy. It recognises that the Social Housing sector is undergoing major changes and that a higher education qualification will give you a key advantage when looking to work or progress in this dynamic and diverse employment sector.
The course starts from the experience you and your fellow students have in the work place and will develop your understanding, good practice and skills in relation to a number of essential core units such as Housing Policy and Practice, Housing Law, Planning and Development.
This is a targeted programme designed to appeal to those participating in the public, private and voluntary housing sector. You will be introduced to a variety of analytical approaches and current issues in this diverse area and given the opportunity for personal and professional development through the completion of a Portfolio. The programme will be delivered by supportive, highly qualified and experienced staff including practitioners employed in the housing sector to ensure you will have a rewarding academic experience on the course.
The academic year is split into two halves – what we call ‘semesters’. Semester A runs from September to February and then Semester B runs from February to June, during each semester you will study four units. The units are largely prescribed in line with sector needs, but opportunity for specialisation in the first year is offered explicitly in the Research Methods unit and through the embedding of Work Based Learning throughout all units.
In the second year, the separate Work Based Learning taught unit enables students to synthesise and evaluate theories and concepts to assess the compatibility and limitations of their application at the work place. As well as your taught units, you will also have a timetabled tutorial slot – where you have access to your personal tutor should you need to discuss any issues that you feel are affecting your studies.

You’ll need 120 UCAS tariff points. All applicants must show that they have a good level of spoken or written English, and if English is not your first language you’ll need to demonstrate the ability to study in English. Please check the International section of the website for details. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have relevant work / life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview.
The successful completion of the Foundation Degree can not only allow you to progress on to the final year of the BA (Hons) in Housing Studies but is also a recognised qualification within the Public and Private Housing sector which can lead to excellent career prospects or progression for those already working within the Housing environment.
