About Blackburn College

Blackburn College has an 'Outstanding' Ofsted inspection, which means that you can feel confident that you will receive the best education possible delivered to a very high standard. Indeed we were one of the first Colleges in the whole country to be rated as 'Outstanding' across the whole College.

Sustainability

The University Centre at Blackburn College

The College has for some time been working on a number of initiatives in relation to Sustainability. It has also identified a number of areas in terms of sustainability that need to be addressed in order to achieve the overarching requirement of the sustainability policy to become a carbon neutral college within ten years. Key to becoming a carbon neutral college is not to look at items in isolation but to look at the college holistically and pull together all strands of college activity that can influence the amount of carbon we consume and strategically reduce that amount of carbon over a fixed period of time. This report is an attempt to identify those areas and form a starting point for a strategic overview of the Colleges Carbon consumption. In summary it is envisaged that initially the college should look at the following areas that consume carbon throughout the college and turn each of the areas activities into carbon consumed figure:

Once compiled these figures of carbon used can be set as the benchmark for future improvements, these can also be reported to governors, Staff and Stakeholders of the college to demonstrate our commitment to carbon reduction.

Straw Bail Project

It is intended that this is a starting point that the college can build upon in order to ensure we are seen as strategically reducing carbon in a methodical fashion. The following information details all of the individual areas and what initiatives can be undertaken in order to reduce carbon (hatched green areas indicate work already in progress or complete).

Although some areas will require initial funding, reducing Carbon overall will lead to significant savings, as Carbon Intensity is an almost exact measure of energy and resource use and the ‘Resource Intensity of Learning’.

Thinking of Sustainability this way, as a journey of continual improvement, will add to the effectiveness and quality of Blackburn College as a Centre of Learning Excellence. In fact there are some major wins in terms of savings and the potential for future funding by demonstrating our commitment and ongoing achievements
