Masterplan

Blackburn College is reviewing its building programme as a result of the funding difficulties with the Further Education building programme. The College and appointed design team have been working hard together to develop a new Masterplan and building proposal.

The new Masterplan although smaller than the old in terms of building size and value, looks to capture the original principles of creating a new coherent campus set around a pedestrian core with landscaped areas, sweeping footpaths and great links between all of the College buildings. In order to achieve this strategy a number of buildings are being considered for disposal. Firstly the main priority is to demolish the existing Feilden Street Tower block and secondly is to look at disposal of Blakey Moor.

A new building will be developed on the site of the old Nab Lane building which at this time is to house a new Learning Resource Centre, Student Services, Exams and Registry, Learner Support, Art and Design, Childcare and Health and Social Care. This new building will look to set high standards for sustainability with the use of innovative solutions to provide maximum comfort and low running costs. The scheme is at an early stage but will be in the region of 8500 sq/m (approximately half of the size of the existing Feilden Building). The building will give dramatic frontages to all four sides of the site with the main entrance feeding off a newly landscaped area along St Paul's Gardens. Glass frontages will line a newly landscaped Nab Lane with a high impact architectural form above linking over to Montague Street.

Inside, the students, staff and visitors will be greeted in a triple height atrium space off which Student Services, Exams, Registry and the Learning Resource Centre are likely to be accessed. Art and Design and Childcare will be located on the upper levels of this 5 storey building, looking down into the atrium and out on to Nab Lane and St Paul's Gardens. A large central staircase within the atrium will tie the building together providing access to all of the buildings facilities.

The College and design team are very excited about these new proposals and welcome you to have a look and provide feedback to enable us to develop this scheme into a building which everyone can enjoy. Comments can be sent to masterplan@blackburn.ac.uk
