Overview

Do you have the First Aiders you need within your workplace or school? Maybe you have too many, maybe you have too little. To help you ensure you are employing the correct number of First Aiders within the workplace we have launched a First Aid calculator. Who is the course for?

The Annual Refresher is only valid for a period of 1 year. At which point the learner would normally retake this qualification or repeat their First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work qualifications. The course will cover the following:

    Treatment of an unconscious casualty
  • Resuscitation of an adult
  • Management of a choking/drowning casualty
  • Control of bleeding
  • Recognition and treatment of Shock

There are three practical assessment scenarios to be used to ensure that learners have gained the required knowledge, skills and understanding relating to the Annual Refresher. The practical assessment is observed by the trainer throughout the course, with the results of each learning outcome recorded on the Practical Assessment paperwork

How will the course be delivered?

The course will be delivered by utilising a variety of teaching styles and resources help make the learning experience interesting and enjoyable. Helping to stimulate learning and maximise theological knowledge and practical application, we use Work books, Power point, group discussion, practical activities and question and answer sessions.

What will I study?

The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with a range of emergency first aid situations. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of the first aider.

This course will cover the following subjects 

    Know how to assess an incident.
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally.
  • Manage a casualty who is wounded and bleeding.
  • Manage a casualty who is in shock.
  • Recognise and assist a casualty who is choking.
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally.
  • Manage a casualty with a minor injury.

The course will be delivered through a flexible approach to teaching considering the learners speed and abilities, in learning style, to make the learning experience more interesting and enjoyable. This helps stimulate and maximise theological knowledge and practical application.

Entry Requirements

Course Entry Criteria

There are no formal entry requirements but learners would be expected to have achieved the First Aid at Work qualification. Learners should possess communication skills sufficient to allow them to address the assessment requirements of the qualification.

How will I be assessed?

The following are the methods of assessment for the First Aid at Work Annual Refresher (QAR) qualification:

Practical assessments – these are observed by the trainer throughout the three-hour course

Practical assessments are:

    Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
  • Unconscious Casualty
  • Wounds, Bleeding and Shock
  • Choking Casualty

Formative Assessments

A range of informal assessment procedures employed by the Trainer/Assessor during the learning process to measure each Learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding related to the assessment criteria.

On success completion of the course candidates will be awarded the First Aid at Work Annual Refresher (QAR) qualification, which is valid for a period of 1 year.
