Overview

This A-Level will appeal to you if you enjoy practical creative activities, have an interest in historical and modern art and want to develop your artistic skills and analytic abilities. The course will also give you the grounding to be able to pursue an academic and professional career in art and design. Art classes take place in the Beacon Centre, which gives you purpose built facilities to work with.

What will I study?

In the first year, you will produce coursework as well as take part in an externally set exam. You will be given the opportunity to experiment with lots of different techniques connected with fine art and explore applicable contextual references.

In the second year, you are given the opportunity to choose your own theme to explore. You will produce development work, artist research and an essay between 1,000 and 3,000 words exploring contextual references. To accompany this development work you will be expected to produce several final outcomes i.e. paintings, sets of prints etc. You will also take part in an externally set exam, with a theme set by the exam board. Your development work is produced with tutor guidance in class and your final outcome is produced under exam conditions.

Entry Requirements

To study A-Level Art you will need 5 Cs at GCSE (or equivalent i.e. grade 4 in reformed GCSEs)

Note: a minimum grade C in a creative subject such as Art, Textiles or Graphics will be an advantage.

How will I be assessed?

A-Level students will be assessed by exams and assignments throughout the two years.

What can I do next?

You could continue to study art through attending our University of the Arts London (UAL) Pre Degree course, which will give you the opportunity to further develop a portfolio of work,as well as exploring several specialist subjects within Art and Design. Alternatively, you could go straight to university and do a BA in one of the hundreds of creative degree courses available.
