Studying A-Level Physical Education will provide you with the opportunity to gain a sound knowledge and understanding in a variety of areas, and is also a multi-disciplinary exciting course which will provide theoretical and practical elements of the subject. You will look at the body in depth and its workings in relation to physical activity and sport, as well as sport from a psychological and sociological perspective.

What will I study?

First year

You will look at the working of the human body in relation to sport and exercise, you will learn how the body adapts to ensure that we can continue participating in sport and exercise.  You will also study the brain and how we learn and how are behaviours are shaped within sport.  You will also study the various issues in sport, such as drug abuse and the role of the media and how it generates interest.

In addition to this you will be required to participate in two sports, to which you are graded upon, one of these sports you can take the role of an official or a coach.

Second year

You will look at the origins of sport and how these have changed through the pre and post industrial revolution and the impacts of those eras’s to shape sport that we know today.  You will also study sports psychology and in particular look at the behaviour of sports performers and the choices that they make.  To complete the year you will look at energy and how the body uses it and re-makes it.  You will look at the various fitness components and how the body adapts and how we train for those, you will get the opportunity to practical investigate this in the colleges state of the art fitness suite.

In addition to this you will be required to participate in one sport, to which you are graded upon, this sport you can take the role of an official or a coach, if you so wish.

Entry Requirements

In addition to the general Sixth Form entry requirements (5 Cs at GCSE or equivalent i.e. grade 4 in reformed GCSEs), you will also need a minimum of a GCSE Grade B in PE if studied and/or GCSE Grade C in Core/Additional Science.

Furthermore, we are looking for you to be involved with regular participation in sport outside of your school commitments.

How will I be assessed?

A-Level students will be assessed by written exam and coursework.

What can I do next?

Students' progress into further study at university or employment within the sport or health and fitness industries.
