This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business and Law is a practical, work related qualification suitable for a wide range of students, built to accommodate the needs of employers and allow progression to university. It provides a more practical, real-world approach to learning alongside a key theoretical background.

The programme is designed as a specialist qualification for students who wish to have a wide range of options for pursuing a career in a legal or business environment. A day in the life of a Business and Law student may involve carrying out a mock trial, researching law related careers or running an advertising campaign.

Students that are successful in enrolling to the CAREER ACADEMY will have, alongside their BTEC Extended Diploma, visiting speakers, mentoring by employee volunteers, six weeks paid internship and employer-led seminars.  There is also the opportunity to visit a European organisation to study their business systems. 

What will I study?

The course is made up of 4 core units and a range of specialist units. These specialist units allow you to explore particular topics in more depth such as:

  • Aspects of Criminal Law affecting Business
  • Civil Liability
  • Legal Systems and Law Making
  • Contract and Business Law
  • Health and Safety Law

Learners will also have the opportunity to undertake a Research Project to gain an additional qualification equivalent to an AS level boosting their UCAS points and future opportunities.

Entry Requirements

This course is recommended for those who have achieved five or more A*- C Grade GCSEs including grade C English and Maths or have completed a BTEC First preferably at Merit or Distinction Grade.

How will I be assessed?

BTECs are not exam-based qualifications. Each BTEC is made up of units. The projects that students undertake form the basis of their results which are graded as a Pass, Merit, Distinction, or a Distinction*.

What can I do next?

Once you have completed your Level 3 Extended Diploma, you will be able to apply to a range of Universities. A triple distrinction in your Extended Diploma gives the same level of UCAS Tariff points as 3 As at A Level. Many students progress to University Centre at Blackburn College where 9 out of 10 graduates are in work or further study just six months after graduation.

Enrichment & Employability

Blackburn College Business & Law students regularly implement business ideas to generate money for charities, and students often run a business publicity roadshow. We hold an annual Dragons’ Den event where students pitch their ideas to a panel of business delegates and students also benefit from regular guest speakers from the legal and retail management fields.

If you study at Level 3 you will also have the opportunity to join the Business Career Academy and gain a 6 week paid internship, an industry mentor and extra UCAS points.

Our tutors also organise social events to attractions such as Manchester United, Alton Towers and Blackpool Pleasure Beach, as well as educational trips London’s Old Bailey, High Court and Houses of Parliament.
