Overview

Employers are increasingly looking for employees with a blend of theoretical and practical skills, and universities too are offering more vocationally oriented programmes for which a Tech Bacc with an applied qualification at its heart could prove a fantastic preparation.

This enhanced academic qualification will give young people aspiring to a technical and vocational career a first-class alternative to the more traditional A level route, ensuring they have the technical ability employers want, and giving industry the skilled workforce it needs to compete in the global race.

What will I study?

Equivalent to 4.5 A Levels the qualification takes place during your normal Level 3 study. In addition to the BTEC Extended Diploma, Technical Baccalaureate students will also study AS Applied level Maths and be asked to complete an extended project which will develop and test students’ skills in extended writing, communication, research, self-discipline and self-motivation.

Learners will study 18 units over 2 years. In the first year learners will study general units to give a broader understanding of the engineering sector, such as:

  • Finishing Operations
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Engineering Design
  • Business Operations
  • Computer Aided Manufacture
Entry Requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSE’s A*-C including Maths and English.  Maths must be A*- A.

How will I be assessed?

AS Applied Maths is examined. 100% coursework assessment on the core units and the extended project. During the course learners are set assignments that will be graded and an overall grade for the qualification awarded. Learners are encouraged to use e-learning to support and extend their learning in their private study time.

What can I do next?

Once you have completed your Level 3 Extended Diploma, you will be able to apply to a range of Universities. A triple distrinction in your Extended Diploma gives the same level of UCAS Tariff points as 3 As at A Level. Many students progress to University Centre at Blackburn College where 9 out of 10 graduates are in work or further study just six months after graduation. Particular courses students progress on to include: Mechanical Engineering Higher National Certificate HNC, Mechanical Engineering Higher National Diploma HND or Electrical and Electronics Engineering BEng (Hons). Mechanical Engineers work on a range of exciting projects. They design, develop and maintain mechanical systems and/or components to required specifications, focusing on economy, safety, reliability, quality and sustainability. You could find yourself working in many sectors including: the building industry and services, including lighting, heating and ventilation; transportation and transport networks; manufacturing and construction and the production and distribution of power.
