Overview

This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care is equivalent to 2 A-Levels and is aimed at people wishing to pursue a career in Health or Social Care or progress onto an Access to Health Care Professions course at college. It provides a practical insight into a range of Health & Social Care related topics and will include a substantial amount of valuable work experience.

What will I study?

The course consists of 18 Health & Social Care units. All students study these 8 mandatory units:-

  • Developing effective communication in Health & Social Care settings
  • Equality, Diversity & Rights
  • Health, Safety & Security in Care Settings
  • Development through the life stages
  • Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology
  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Sociological perspectives
  • Psychological perspectives
  • 40% of your study programme will be within placement. 
  • Maths & English*

Learners also study at least 10 optional unit covering topics such as Nutrition, Safeguarding and Complementary Therapies. In addition to your main course and work placement, you will gain a certificate in First Aid and have the opportunity to study functional skills in maths, or resit GCSE maths if required.

*If you have not achieved a Grade C or above in your Maths and English Language GCSEs you will be required to work towards a GCSE Grade C in these subjects as part of your Study Programme.

 

Entry Requirements

This qualification is recommended for those who have achieved five or more A*- C Grade GCSEs including Maths and English or for progressing students have completed a Level 2 Diploma at a distinction grade and completed GCSE Maths and English grade C and above. You will also need a satisfactory police check (DBS).

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is via coursework. You will be assessed through assignment tasks and practical experiences. Assignments are based on real life scenarios that you would encounter in a health and social care setting and many of the tasks are directly linked to your work placement. Assignments are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. You will also be required to complete the set amount of placement hours over the 2 year period. 

What can I do next?

This qualification can be a stepping stone to university for anyone wanting to study nursing, social work, youth work, paramedic or other related Health or Care careers. You may also wish to move straight into the industry and gain yourself full time employment.

Facilities

Based in the £18.3 million Beacon Centre, you will have access to practical teaching rooms for care, cooking and creative activities, as well as dedicated IT suites with interactive whiteboards. You will also have use of the free WiFi across campus, college canteens and the library and resource centre, which houses over 60 computers and 45,000 books.

Enrichment & Employability

All of our learners will participate in 800 hours of work experience in a variety of settings including hospitals, care homes, day centres, childrens settings and dementia units. It is vital that you learn first aid, and our trained first aiders have the specialist equipment needed to train you with the necessary first aid skills and qualifications. 

Our learners will also have the opportunity to take part in volunteering opportunities such as coffee mornings for cancer charitites and soup kitchen volunteering. Both of which will enhance your CV and employability skills.
