Explaining the new GCSE grading system
From 2017 onwards, there is a brand new GCSE grading system. The current A* to G system will be replaced with a numerical system - ranging from 9 (highest) to 1 (lowest).
The new performance tables will focus on students achieving grades 9 to 4 as opposed to the current grade A* to C. Grade 4 will be a standard pass and grade 5 will be deemed a strong pass.
The new system is designed to reveal the differences in students' skill levels at the higher end of the spectrum. For example, A* and A will be replaced with 9, 8 and 7.
Have a look at the chart below for a comparison between the new and current grading system.
