Nicola Hedge completed a Foundation Degree in Sports Development in 2012 (now a Foundation Degree in Community Coaching and Sports Development) before progressing to Honours level and completing her PGCE (Education and Training).
Nicola joined the University Centre at Blackburn College having previously worked in the Hospitality industry. She wished to retrain as a PE Teacher. She now teaches at Pendle Vale College as well as working as a coach for Rounders England and Getin2 Rounders.
Her work with Rounders England sees her deliver Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching courses as well as Preliminary and Intermediate Umpire courses, the length and breadth of England.
Nicola was one of the people who helped grow the game of Rounders in Burnley. Her hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. She was recently awarded Coach of the Year at the Burnley Community Sports Awards and her team, Burnley Rounders Club, received the accolade of Community Club of the Year at Lancashire Sports Awards.
As part of her work with the Getin2 team, she contributed to Burnley Rounders Club obtaining the Guinness World Record for the most people taking part in a Rounders game! A total of 118 players took part, easily beating the previous record total of 76.
Nicola said: “Whilst I was studying my Foundation Degree I did some voluntary hours with Burnley Leisure and that was how I got into rounders. The team got funding from Rounders England and my involvement with the sport grew from there.
“My main job is working as a Cover Supervisor at Pendle Vale College but I also work for Rounders England which sees me conduct coaching training all over the UK and deliver umpire qualifications.
“I would recommend getting back into education to anyone. My life is very different from when I was working in the Hospitality sector and I am now doing something I really love.”
