Rock Solid Results

undefinedA BLACKBURN student has received rock solid results, allowing her to go on to study BA (Hons) Geography at Lancaster University.

Maya Mahmood, from Blackburn, was delighted to find out she had received an A* in Geography, an A in Religious Studies and a B in English Language in her A-Levels at Blackburn College.

Maya, 18, a former Witton Park High School pupil, will now go on to study a BA Hons degree in Geography at Lancaster University after receiving an unconditional offer.

She said: “I have studied hard, but I was still really nervous when I was handed by results envelope this morning.

“I was told by the university that if I got the grades, I would get £1,000 too.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw what i’d got. I’m so pleased I got an A* in Geography. I’m really looking forward to starting at Lancaster now.”

Maya said she would love to pursue a career in geography, ideally with the Royal Geographical Society.

Maya said: “Geography is always changing and affecting our world. It’s interesting because things like the floods and natural disasters affect everyone.”

“Blackburn College has really helped me. Since starting here I have grown in confidence and improved my inter-personal skills. I have definitely loved my time at Blackburn College. I have made a lot of memories here.”

“Blackburn College have a relationship with Lancaster University which means that A-Level students are guaranteed an interview with the University. There are mock interviews at College and support with your personal statement. The tutors have always been approachable and there for me.”

Blackburn College students achieved a 100% pass rate in 22 A-Level subjects with the highest performing A-Level programmes including Accounting, Further Maths, Government and Politics, Classical Civilisations and Fine Art.

The College’s continued success - year-on-year improvements for three years running - means this year’s students are set to progress to top universities across the country including Lancaster University, the University of Leeds, the University of Manchester, and Blackburn College’s own University Centre where 85% of degrees are awarded by Lancaster University and with over 3000 students in 2016.

Principal and Chief Executive Dr Thomas Moore was delighted with the results.

“We would like to congratulate all the students on their hard work and dedication and wish them well in the future.

“Special thanks must be given to the College’s excellent team of academic staff for their continued commitment to outstanding teaching and learning.

“Students consistently tell us that the academic support and guidance received from their teachers and support staff is a key reason for their high level of success and in the results of the National Student Survey 2016 of Higher Education Institutions in England, the University Centre at Blackburn College was placed in the top 25% nationally for academic support.”
