How to Apply
Full-time Courses
Applications to full-time courses are made through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This means that you only complete one application form for several different courses/institutions. If you can show you will benefit from one of the courses we offer, we will do our utmost to make it happen.
You can usually start to apply from September of the year before you want to start your course, although applications can be made at any time. Once you've chosen your courses, you should be ready to start your application. The application process itself is relatively simple and we provide help and assistance throughout each stage.
To apply through UCAS, visit the website (www.ucas.ac.uk) and click on 'apply'. The first time you use UCAS you will have to register your details with the service. You should keep a note of your login and passwords but keep this information safe. All UCAS applications must be completed online. If you need help to complete your online UCAS application, specialist 'The Hub' staff at University Centre at Blackburn College can help. You can give them a call on 01254 29-29-29 if you wish, or use our text phone for the hearing impaired service on 07890 453187. The Hub can help you to register with UCAS, complete the different sections of the form and offer support when you prepare your personal statement.
Our institution code is B40. You can use this code in UCAS to search for all the courses we offer and then apply to them.

We are particularly proud of culture within UCBC which positively supports all learners irrespective of any disability, gender or culture and your application will be assessed on merit. If you feel you may be eligible to apply for DSA or would like to find out more about services available to disabled students please contact our Disability Services. Remember that disabilities can be hidden such as dyslexia and that mental health illnesses can also classify for Disabled Students’ Allowance. If you think you might qualify for support then it’s really important you let us know or you declare this on your application – this way we can ensure we can support you through the application process too.
What happens to my application once I apply through UCAS?
When UCAS receive your completed application, they will begin to process your details. If they have to query anything, they will contact you to find out more information. After processing your application, UCAS should send you a welcome letter that lists your choices – you need to check this information carefully and let UCAS know if anything appears to be incorrect. This letter should usually come within 14 days of you filling your application.
We are sent your application once it is processed. We can view your application but we won’t be able to see which other institutions you have applied to. Once we receive your application from UCAS we’ll send you a postcard so you know we’ve got your details. We’ll then consider your application against our own admissions criteria – this can take a little bit of time as we may need to speak to an individual tutor. It may be necessary for you to attend an interview and we will write to you to confirm the details. We will let UCAS know whether you have been offered a place or otherwise – you will be able to see our decision by entering your own personal area of UCAS with your Personal ID/Username and will be able to track your application progress.

Personal Statements
The personal statement is your opportunity to tell us about your suitability for the course(s) that you hope to study on. You need to demonstrate your enthusiasm and commitment, and above all, ensure that you stand out from the crowd. Every year lots of students struggle with their personal statements.
Over the last few years the way you write a personal statement has changed – nowadays you need to focus on why you want to study on a particular course rather than just your interests, hobbies and suitability for higher education in general. There are lots of resources online to help you write your personal statement. Please ensure that you write your personal statement in your own words. UCAS are able to check personal statements and will inform us if similarities have been detected between your statements and another applicant's. This could slow your application process down. You can also come in and see us for advice – no matter where you end up applying to. You should contact The Hub if you need advice about writing a personal statement.
You can contact The Hub for advice on writing Personal Statements by emailing thehub@blackburn.ac.uk or phoning 01254 29-29-29.
