Scholarships and Financial Support

Blackburn College offers a range of scholarships available to new students. We know that times may be difficult for parents, and that 16-18 year olds need money whilst studying full time, so we want to help motivate you to continue to work hard and show dedication to your success, by offering a £1,000 scholarship.

High Achievers Scholarships

This is a scholarship for new students who have gained or are expecting to achieve a minimum of 3 A*s (8s) and 3 As (7s) in their GCSEs. The academic scholarship is designed to support you and provide financial assistance towards the costs of fulfilling your academic potential without the added pressure of having to take on paid work. When you receive your GCSE results, you will need to complete the application form and return to studentfinance@blackburn.ac.uk.

You will be asked to actively promote the college and represent the students of the College on committees, focus groups and College events.

STEM Scholarships

This scholarship is for new students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths. You will need to demonstrate a real passion for your subject with a desire to succeed in your career. You will also need to have an excellent school report, be highly motivated and ideally taken part in some form of related project or activity demonstrating your commitment to your subject.

You will be required to actively promote the college and represent the students of the College on committees, focus groups and College events.

Sport Scholarships

The Sporting Excellence Scholarship is for new students who are dedicated to a sport and representing the district or even the nation at that sport. You will also need to have an excellent school report. The scholarship is designed to support new students and provide financial assistance towards the costs of fulfilling your sporting potential. You may use the money for transport to practice sessions or competitions, buy quality equipment and/or pay for a specialist coach.

You will be required to actively promote the college and represent the students of the College on committees, focus groups and College events.

Creative Arts Scholarships

The Creative Arts Scholarship can relate to high achievement in any field of artistic endeavour; fine art, media, photography, design or music. You will also need to have an excellent school report. The scholarship is designed to support students and provide financial assistance towards the costs of transport to practice sessions, buying quality equipment or uniform and/or hiring venues.

You will be required to actively promote the college and represent the students of the College on committees, focus groups and College events.

Digital Scholarships

This scholarship is for new students interested in Digital. You will need to demonstrate a real passion for your subject with a desire to succeed in your career. You will also need to have an excellent school report, be highly motivated and ideally taken part in some form of related project or activity demonstrating your commitment to your subject.

You will be required to actively promote the college and represent the students of the College on committees, focus groups and College events.

Health Care Scholarships

The Healthcare Scholarship is for new students who can demonstrate their aptitude to work in the health and social care profession. You must have an excellent school record and some relevant experience either through; paid employment, volunteering or through caring for a family member. You must show impressive self-motivation along with unquestionable support and empathy towards others in order to receive this scholarship.

You will be required to actively promote the college and represent the students of the College on committees, focus groups and College events.

 

Being aged between 16–18, you will not need to pay for your education, and Blackburn College will provide you with as much financial support as they can to support you through your studies.

How would you like a free travel pass?

At Blackburn College that’s exactly what’s on offer this September for full time 16 to 18 year old students.

The travel pass provides free travel to Blackburn College, it can be used at any time and at the weekend too!

We are also offering a low cost travel pass if you’re not eligible for the free travel pass.

Terms & Conditions

  • A free travel pass is available if you live in a household with an annual income of £34,000 or less in any of the following areas: Accrington, Bacup, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Chipping, Chorley, Clayton-le-Moors, Clitheroe, Colne, Darwen, Feniscowles, Great Harwood, Haslingden, Helmshore, Longridge, Nelson, Padiham, Preston, Rawtenstall, Rishton, Rising Bridge, Waterfoot and Whalley
  • If you’re not eligible for the FREE travel pass we’re also offering a LOW cost travel pass. If you live in any of the following areas: Blackburn, Darwen, Accrington, Clayton-le-Moors, Great Harwood, Huncoat, Rishton, Rising Bridge or Feniscowles the low cost travel pass is £65 per term. Alternatively if you live in: Bacup, Barnoldswick, Bolton, Burnley, Chorley, Clitheroe, Colne, Haslingden, Helmshore, Nelson, Padiham, Preston, Rawtenstall, Whalley or Wilpshire the low cost travel pass is £85 per term.

Support Allowance

The Blackburn College Support Allowance can help you with a range of costs which are associated with studying.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, dependent on your household income, you will receive a payment to help towards the costs of studying which will include, meals, printing and stationery. The payment amounts have not yet been confirmed for September 2021 entry.

Eligibility Criteria

The support allowance is available to full-time 16-18 year-old students, starting from September 2021. You must:

  • Be at least 16 but under 19 years of age on 31 August 2021
  • Have been resident in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland for the last 3 years

All funds are dependent on attendance and progress on your course and all funds are limited.

Terms and Conditions Apply

  • All Scholarships at Blackburn College are limited, available to new students only and are assessed on an individual basis against set criteria
  • Students will be required to attend an interview and if successful a contract of agreement will be formed
  • If students leave the College against the advice of a member of College staff, have poor grades or attendance they will be expected to return the scholarship payment

The £1,000 Scholarship Payment will be paid in two installments of £250 in Jan and May for each year of the Study Programme undertaken.

On receipt of your application form and supporting documents, we will issue an acknowledgement letter. If you have not received a letter from the College, within 28 working days of submitting your completed form, please contact us.
