Starting Out... courses. New for September 2019 - This new curriculum is designed to allow students with few qualifications to start a course at Blackburn College and move on to further study.

Starting Out...

Sometimes we all need a fresh start. At Blackburn College we recognise that some students can often face setbacks that are difficult to overcome. Foundation Learning at Blackburn College offers a fantastic opportunity to get your learning and College career back on track and on the road to further study or employment.

Our range of Starting Out courses are ideal for students who are ready to take the first steps into College life. Our aim is to help you develop a range of important skills, both social, academic and practical. We will provide you with the support and encouragement you need to grow in confidence and express your personality so that you’re ready to move into a job or onto your next course at College.

The Starting Out… courses are full-time, during which you will also study Functional Skills English and Maths in order for you to gain a recognised English and Maths qualification.

Starting Out... in September 2019

Choose from 9 different options for students starting Foundation Learning courses in September 2019.

Entry level 2

Entry Level 3

These are entry level courses which will provide you with the basic practical skills and knowledge in your chosen subject area, the course will also help you to develop social and interpersonal skills and give you a firm foundation to go into employment or progress onto a Level One course at Blackburn College.

You will also study Functional Skills English and Maths in order for you to gain a recognised English and Maths qualification. Developing your English and Maths skills are important in order to progress to another course.

Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for these courses. You will be able to come to Blackburn College for an informal interview before you start the course at which you will be able to meet the team who will be teaching you and have a look where you will be studying. This will also help us make plans to support you when you arrive to study at Blackburn College.

 

Starting Out... at other time of the year

Throughout the year you will be able to come to Blackburn College for an informal interview before you start the course at which you will be able to meet the team who will be teaching you and have a look where you will be studying. This will also help us make plans to support you when you arrive to study at Blackburn College.

 

Starting Out... Right Now

This course is designed for those students who have missed the traditional September start date for courses at Blackburn College.

From October through to April you can study this 12 week course if you are aged 16-18. You will gain a recognised qualification and then be able to move onto other courses starting in September at Blackburn College or move onto the Starting Out… in Employment course which means you will start a work placement.

This course runs between October and April only. At other times of the year we will have more appropriate courses for you to start on.

You will develop a range of important skills - social, academic and practical in this 12 week programme.

You will also study Functional Skills English and Maths in order for you to gain a recognised English and Maths qualification. Developing your English and Maths skills is important in order to progress to another course.

Starting Out... in Employment

This course is designed to provide you with the support and encouragement for you to grow in confidence and express your personality so that you’re ready to move into employment, voluntary work or onto an Apprenticeship.

Whilst you’re studying you will also complete an employability qualification.

You'll get:

  • a work experience placement
  • help with English and Maths (if you need it)
  • an employability qualification

The programme lasts for 8 weeks - attendance and timekeeping is very important and you should have an idea of the area or type of business you wish to work in. This course is a Traineeship.
