We provide a selection of Starting Out courses for students who are ready to take the first steps into College life.

Our Starting Out… in Employment course is a Traineeship.

A Traineeship is a course with work experience that gets you ready for work or an Apprenticeship. It is ideal if you wish to start an Apprenticeship but do not have any work experience, or it is ideal if you are finding it difficult getting an Apprenticeship placement and need to build up your CV a little.

You can start this course at any time in the year.

What will I study?

We will provide you with the support and encouragement for you to grow in confidence and express your personality so that you’re ready to move into employment, voluntary work or onto an Apprenticeship.

Our aim is to help you develop a number of important skills - social, academic and practical skills and build your work experience.

The programme lasts for 8 weeks-  attendance and timekeeping is very important and you should have an idea of the area or type of business you wish to work in.

Whilst you’re studying you will also complete an employability qualification.

You’ll get:

  • a work experience placement
  • help with English and maths (if you need it)
  • an employability qualification.
Entry Requirements

You can apply if you’re:

  • eligible to work in England
  • unemployed and have little or no work experience
  • aged 16 to 24 and qualified below Level 3 (eg. below A-Levels).

You should have a GCSE in English Language and Maths at grade 3 or 4 (or higher) if you wish to study this course.

How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed by coursework.

What can I do next?

At the end of your work experience placement you’ll get a a reference, and support from an employment co-ordinator to find alternative work. Most students progress from Traineeships onto an Apprenticeship with Blackburn College. You may also move onto another course at Blackburn College or into work or voluntary work.
