We provide a selection of Starting Out courses for students who are ready to take the first steps into College life.
These Foundation Learning courses are full-time and you will study with students with a range of abilities.
Our aim is to help you develop a number of important skills - social, academic and practical skills and build your skills in either Early Years or Health and Social Care.
We will provide you with the support and encouragement for you to grow in confidence and express your personality so that you’re ready to move into a job or onto the next course at College.
You will also study Functional Skills English and Maths in order for you to gain a recognised English and Maths qualification.
- What will I study?
This is an entry level course for young people who are interested in working in Early Years or Health and Social Care.
It will provide you with the basic practica Early Years or Health and Social Care skills and knowledge that you need in order to either gain employment or progress to a Level One course at Blackburn College.
It will also help develop social and interpersonal skills and give you a firm foundation so that you can move onto further study or employment or voluntary work in time.
When you study this course you will be able to gain more than one qualification! You will gain a Certificate in Personal and Social Development (Entry Level 3) and a Certificate in Occupational Studies (Entry Level 3) which is the Business part of the course that you will study. You will also study Functional Skills English and Maths in order for you to gain a recognised English and Maths qualification.
Just some of the exciting Early Years or Health and Social Care topics you will cover include:
- Working a Team
- Food and Nutrition
- Caring for Children and Babies
There are more modules that you will study and you will be able to take part in our Enterprise activities which will help you to gain the Certificate in Personal and Social Development.
By the time you finish this course our aim is that you will have successfully completed mutliple qualifications that allow you to move onto further study!
- Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this course. You will be able to come to College for an informal interview before you start the course. This is so you will be able to meet the team who will be teaching you and have a look where you will be studying. This will also help us make plans to support you when you arrive to study at Blackburn College.
You will have an Initial Assessment when you start College this will help us determine that this course is the right one for you.
Alternatively, you may have also studied our ‘Starting Out… in College’ course.
- How will I be assessed?
This course is assessed by coursework.
You will also study Functional Skills English and Maths in order for you to gain a recognised English and Maths qualification and this may mean that you study an English/Maths examination as part of the course.
- What can I do next?
This course is designed so that you are able to start a Level One course in Early Years or Health and Social Care. You may also decide that you wish to move into work or voluntary work.
