This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business (Accounting) is suitable for those wanting to pursue a career Business / Accounting. It is a practical, interactive course that aims to provide you with the skills required for attending university and securing employment.

The 2 year programme will introduce Business, Financial and Management accounting and accounting systems; Human resources management; internet marketing; research and product promotions; and understanding retail operations and how to manage small businesses.

Students that are successful in enrolling to the Career Academy will also have access to visiting speakers from the world of business, mentoring schemes by employee volunteers, and invaluable six weeks paid internships and employer-led seminars.

With all of our 2 year programmes we focus on developing your personal skills, IT and numeracy, and encouraging creative thinking. There is also the opportunity to visit business professionals in the sector to investigate how their business systems operate.

Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.


What will I study?

You will study various modules on this course including:-

The course is made up of core units and a range of specialist units. These specialist units allow you to explore particular topics in more depth such as:

Entry Requirements

You should have 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 including English Language and Maths or completion of a Level 2 course.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of assessment modes; business reports; case studies; business projects; assignments; presentations; role plays, teamwork and exams.

The projects that students undertake form the basis of their results which are graded as a Pass, Merit, Distinction, or a Distinction*.

What can I do next?

Once you have completed your Level 3 Extended Diploma, you will be able to apply to a range of Universities. A triple distinction in your Extended Diploma gives the same level of UCAS Tariff points as 3 As at A-Level. Many students progress to University Centre at Blackburn College where 9 out of 10 graduates are in work or further study just six months after graduation. Students who have enjoyed the Accounting elements of the Extended Diploma and wish to move into these areas can progress on to a range of specialise in 

You could choose to take a more general Business qualification which lets you experience a range of areas including: Accounting, Marketing, Business, Human Resource Management and more. Course available include:

Accounting Technician

To get into a paid job you would usually need at least a year's experience as a volunteer. A background in consumer advice, welfare rights or debt recovery may also help you.

Blackburn College Business students regularly implement business ideas to generate money for charities, and students often run a business publicity roadshow. We hold an annual Dragons’ Den event where students pitch their ideas to a panel of business delegates and students also benefit from regular guest speakers from the legal and retail management fields.

There will be an opportunity to study an additional unit in IFS – the Institute if Financial Services to gain extra UCAS points.
