Overview

This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business with Accounting is suitable for those wanting to pursue a career in Finance or Accounting. It is a practical, interactive course that aims to provide you with the skills required for attending university and securing employment.

The 2 year programme will introduce Business, Financial and Management accounting and accounting systems; Human resources management; internet marketing; research and product promotions; and understanding retail operations and how to manage small businesses.

Students that are successful in enrolling to the CAREER ACADEMY will also have access to visiting speakers from the world of business, mentoring schemes by employee volunteers, and invaluable six weeks paid internships and employer-led seminars.

With all of our 2 year programmes we focus on developing your personal skills, IT and numeracy, and encouraging creative thinking. There is also the opportunity to visit a European Organisation to investigate how their business systems operate.

The Diploma is equivalent to 2 A-Levels and the Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

 

What will I study?

You will study various modules on this course including:-

  • Accountancy theory and practice
  • The importance of human resources within business
  • The practice of management and retail

The course is made up of 4 core units and a range of specialist units. These specialist units allow you to explore particular topics in more depth such as:

  • Marketing
  • Human Resources
  • Management
  • Retail
  • Information Technology

You may also opt to study an IFS (The Institute of Financial Services) Certificate/ Diploma in Financial Studies.

Entry Requirements

You should have 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 including English Language and Maths or completion of a Level 2 course.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of assessment modes; business reports; case studies; business projects; assignments; presentations; role plays and teamwork. 

The projects that students undertake form the basis of their results which are graded as a Pass, Merit, Distinction, or a Distinction*.

What can I do next?

Once you have completed your Level 3 Extended Diploma, you will be able to apply to a range of Universities. A triple distinction in your Extended Diploma gives the same level of UCAS Tariff points as 3 As at A-Level. Many students progress to University Centre at Blackburn College where 9 out of 10 graduates are in work or further study just six months after graduation. Students who have enjoyed the Accounting elements of the Extended Diploma and wish to move into these areas can progress on to a range of subjects.

You could choose to specialise in Accountancy by studying:

  • Business Accounting BA (Hons)

You can also progress into a range of other Business releated areas. You could choose to specialise in Human Resource Management by studying:

  • Business with Human Resource Management BA (Hons)

Or you could choose to take a more general Business qualification which lets you experience a range of areas including: Accounting, Marketing, Business, Human Resource Management and more. Course available include:

Facilities

You will study in The Elizabeth building – an addition to the 1888 Old Victoria building, situated on the college campus, in the heart of Blackburn Town Centre.

You will also benefit from free wireless access throughout the building and a library and resource centre providing in excess of 60 computers and 45,000 books.

Enrichment & Employability

Blackburn College Business students regularly implement business ideas to generate money for charities, and students often run a business publicity roadshow. We hold an annual Dragons’ Den event where students pitch their ideas to a panel of business delegates and students also benefit from regular guest speakers from the legal and retail management fields.

There will be an opportunity to study an additional unit in IFS – the Institute if Financial Services to gain extra UCAS points.

If you study at Level 3 you will also have the opportunity to join the Business Career Academy and gain a 6 week paid internship, an industry mentor and extra UCAS points.

Our tutors also organise social events to attractions such as Manchester United, Alton Towers and Blackpool Pleasure Beach, as well as educational trips London’s Old Bailey, High Court and Houses of Parliament.
