Overview

The Computing and Information Technology with Programming, Games Development & Cyber Security Level 3 Extended Diploma is an intensive 2 year full-time study programme. Designed to offer you support in concentrating your learning within areas of IT, you will be able to specialise in software design, web design and programming. 

Alongside your academic studies, you will have the opportunity to visit Universities, take part in World Skills competitions and go on trips within the UK and abroad. 

If you are successful in enrolling to Blackburn College's Career Academy, you will benefit from listening to expert guest speakers from the professional digital world, mentoring schemes, invaluable six week paid internships and various external visits and seminars. There is also an option to visit a European organisation to study their business systems.

What will I study?

You will study 18 units over 2 years and in the first year, you will study general untis to give a broader understanding of the IT sector:-

  • Computer systems
  • Website production and management
  • Web animation for interactive media
  • Games development and 2D animation
  • Web server scripting
  • Cyber security
  • Event driven programming
  • Graphics and multimedia design
  • IT essentials

In the second year, you will have the option to take a specialist route within the IT sector:-

  • Project management
  • Systems analysis and design
  • Computer game platforms and technologies
  • Digital graphics for interactive media
  • 2D Animation production
  • Web server side scripting.
Entry Requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 including English Language and Maths, or completion of a Level 2 course.

How will I be assessed?

100% coursework assessment.

During the course learners are set assignments that will be graded and an overall grade for the qualification awarded.

Learners are encouraged to use e-learning to support and extend their learning in their private study time.

What can I do next?

A triple distinction in your Extended Diploma gives the same level of UCAS Tariff points as 3 As at A-Level.

Once you have completed your Level 3 Extended Diploma, you will be able to apply to a range of Universities and many students progress to the University Centre at Blackburn College, where 9 out of 10 graduates are in work or further study just six months after graduation.

Computing students move into exciting and varied careers and you may find yourself working as an App Developer, website developer or protecting and maintaining an organisation's IT systems.

Particular courses that students progress on to include:-

  • Computing Foundation Degree FdSc
  • Graphic Design Foundation Degree FdA - this will enable you to build on the design elements of the Interactive Media and Software Extended Diploma. 

Following your foundation degree, you may progress on to a Top Up Year at Blackburn College's University Centre, which means that you can graduate with a BSc (Hons) qualification in three years, validated by Lancaster University.

Facilities

You will study in St Pauls Computing Centre where there is twelve dedicated computing rooms, and a gaming room, each equipped with eighteen PCs running Windows 7, Office 2010 and a range of software including Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Flash, Fireworks, Photoshop, Visual C++ 2010 and a wide range of specialised software. We have Microsoft and CISCO Academy accreditation and industry trained tutors. You will also benefit from free wireless access throughout the building and a library and resource centre providing in excess of 60 computers and 45,000 books.

Enrichment & Employability

Our computing and IT courses teach the skills and knowledge that will prepare you for University or a career in an IT or computing role. We can develop your knowledge of digital technologies and whether you want to be a computer games developer, IT manager or technician, these courses could be for you.

Our students take part in a variety of trips including The Photographic Museum to see the professional uses of computer animation techniques and video production.

If you are studying or progress on to a level 3 course you can apply to join the IT Career Academy. You will be able to carry out a 6 week paid internship with a local employer and have an industry mentor for the duration of your course. Taking part in this academy will also gain you extra UCAS points.

In 2015 two Blackburn College IT/Computing students competed in the regional IT World Skills Competition and won their place in the national finals in Birmingham.
