Overview

This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and is aimed at people who want to pursue a career in Health or Social Care, or progress into Higher Education to undertake a Degree programme.  It provides a practical insight into a range of Health & Social Care related topics and will include a substantial amount of valuable work experience.

You will study 13 Health & Social Care units, you will be required to undertake 4 work placements during this two year course, which will provide you with a total of 700 hours of work experience which will give you a distinct advantage when applying for University or going  into employment.  Work placements are arranged for you and are local to you, our Placement Team will support you throughout this process.

What will I study?

The course consists of 13 Health & Social Care units, which include:

  • Lifespan development- from conception to old age.
  • Working in Health & Social Care - roles and responsibilities.
  • Meeting individual care and support needs - communication, ethics, equality and diversity.
  • Anatomical and Physiological Disorders, investigating conditions that affect the body and the relevant treatments.
  • Anatomy, the structure and realtionship between the parts of the body
  • Research, how and why research is carried out, focussing on research from the Health & Social Care sector.
  • Principles of safe practice within the Health and Social Care sector.
  • Caring for individuals with dementia.

Entry Requirements

This qualification requires 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 including Maths and English Language.

A successful DBS check is also required.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through exams and assignments.

 

What can I do next?

This qualification can be a stepping stone to university for anyone wanting to study nursing (childrens, adult or mental health) social work, youth work, paramedic or other related Health or Care careers.

You may also wish to move straight into the industry and gain yourself full time employment.

Facilities

Based in the £18.3 million Beacon Centre, you will have access to practical teaching rooms for care, cooking and creative activities, as well as dedicated IT suites with interactive whiteboards. You will also have use of the free WiFi across campus, college canteens and the library and resource centre, which houses over 60 computers and 45,000 books.

Enrichment & Employability

All of our learners will participate in 800 hours of work experience in a variety of settings including hospitals, care homes, day centres, childrens settings and dementia units. It is vital that you learn first aid, and our trained first aiders have the specialist equipment needed to train you with the necessary first aid skills and qualifications. 

Our learners will also have the opportunity to take part in volunteering opportunities such as coffee mornings for cancer charitites and soup kitchen volunteering. Both of which will enhance your CV and employability skills.
