This Level 3 UAL Extended Diploma in Fashion, Textiles and Design aims to provide a firm foundation in core fashion & textile practice and to encourage personal development and expression. The course helps learners to find out what they enjoy, what they are good at and allows them to develop a set of valuable skills for future study and work. University of the Arts, London Awarding Body (UAL) qualifications are recognised and highly regarded across the country, are designed by some of the best art, design and media educators in the world. Blackburn College is one of only 10 Colleges in the country to have a UAL progression agreement, which means that our students will benefit from:

What will I study?

The course is made up of 9 units in year one and a further 4 larger units in year two. Learners are given a range of projects that challenge them to explore different areas of fashion and textiles practice including core drawing skills (visual studies to fashion illustration), printmaking, surface pattern design, garment construction, weave and embroidery, supported by contextual studies throughout.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade C/4 including English Language or completion of a Level 2 course.

How will I be assessed?

In this qualification learners engage with study through a range of creative assignments, all of which help build confidence, knowledge and skills in preparation for their final Project Proposal and Realisation at the end of year 2 in which each learner specialises. At this point each learner is at the pinnacle of their learning and is assessed for their overall grade, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What can I do next?

This qualification is mapped to the Level 3/4 UAL Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma  at Blackburn College. Many learners wish to complete this diverse, higher level course before they progress onto University or employment.

Learners can also progress to Fashion & Textiles related degree courses at the University Centre at Blackburn College, or to a whole range of other Fashion & Textiles related degree courses at leading institutions in the United Kingdom. Some learners also progress directly to employment within the creative industries.

You will be based in the new £18.3 million Beacon Centre. In order for you to flourish in the creative field we have invested in brand new facilities such as Apple Mac design suites, spacious studios, industrial sewing machines, screen printing and weaving equipment and our very own in house photography studio and infinity curve.

We offer students the opportunity to experience a diverse and exciting visiting lecturer programme that includes Lecturers from Chelsea School of Art and the Saatchi Gallery.

We also help many students find relevant part time work to enhance your chance of employment and give you a taste of working in a creative career. 

Our students continually engage with real live projects from local initiatives for Child Action Northwest through to working with national bodies such as The Tate, The Saatchi Gallery and having work published in magazines or shown on TV and at Film Festivals.

You will also have the opportunity to go on residentials to gain inspiration, visit universities and take part in critical artist’s discussions.
