Overview

Travel and Tourism is an exciting and rapidly developing sector of the UK economy, seeing expansion in terms of job opportunities, every year.

It is an exciting career path to undertake with this course set to develop your knowledge and build skills and experiences within the Travel and Tourism sector, you will also gain a Cabin Crew qualification during your course to add to your CV.

During this study programme you will benefit from a wealth of activities ranging from listening to invited guest speakers from British Airways and Emirates, undertake a residential trip to London during which you will take part in a British Airways cabin crew training day at Heathrow Airport.  You will also benefit from our training in our mock aircraft cabin at Blackburn College.

You will also gain experience and benefit from investigating responsible tourism and managing tourism's environmental impact.

This varied course will provide you with an insight into the travel and tourism, and its key component areas. You will complete a mandatory work placement providing valuable experience to help you to secure your dream career.  You can suggest the work placement and we will support you to attain this by preparing your CV and letters of enquiry, alternatively we can suggest and arrange placements for you.  Placements have historically been at Manchester Airport and a range of Travel Agencies.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to go onto Higher Education or you can go directly into your dream career whether this is as cabin crew, as a holiday rep, travel agent, tour operator, within the cruising industry, sustainable tourism, aviation in terms of airline and airport support and management, there are so very many career options to choose from.

As part of your course you will complete work placements providing valuable experience to help you to secure your dream career.  

We will also support you with interview practice, both for one to one interview and a panel or group interview to ensure that you are fully prepared.

You will also study for a  NCFE Cabin Crew qualification, which is  an industry widely recognised qualification.

As part of the course you can continue with a Maths GSCE programme and also GSCE English Language to improve your grade C/4 and thereby increase your employability.

 

Entry Requirements

5 x Grade C/4 GCSE or equivalent, including English Language, or completion of a Level 2 related course.

How will I be assessed?

The Level 3 Extended Diploma assessment includes a range of internally assessed coursework based modules, including practical activities such as; role plays, presentations and demonstrations, alongside written assignments and reports.

What can I do next?

Once you have completed your Level 3 course, you will be able to apply to a range of Universities. Many students progress to the University Centre at Blackburn College. A particular course students can progress on to is:

Career Options

Air Cabin Crew

An air cabin crew team help to make sure that airline passengers have a comfortable, safe and pleasant flight. As an air cabin crew member, you need to be flexible to people’s individual needs and cultures, and have a polite but firm approach with customers.

You will need excellent communication and organisational skills for this role. Being able to work well in a team is also really important. If you like meeting different people every day, and you enjoy travelling, this job could be ideal for you.

Events Manager

If you enjoy planning, organising and meeting people, this could be just what you are looking for. Events managers are responsible for organising and running all kinds of events. You would control the whole project, from planning at the start to running the event on the day.

Taking a qualification in events management may help you but it’s not essential if you can get relevant work experience.

To become an events manager, you will need to have good communication and 'people' skills. You will need to be good at problem-solving. You will also need to have lots of determination and a positive attitude.

Within our classrooms, we have a mock aircraft cabin, which helps our lessons take flight.  You’ll have access to all the facilities of our £65 million campus, in the centre of Blackburn, with fantastic transport routes around Lancashire.

Enrichment & Employability

Our students supplement their studies with additional courses in Cabin Crew, Resort Representatives and Aviation Operations.  These national awards will give you a guaranteed job interview with two airlines, a resort representative company and a Ground Handling Agent.

The Sixth Form has a wide-range of enrichment activities on offer, including sport, nail art, languages, drama, music and our famous Knitting Club.  You’ll be encouraged to keep busy and have fun with our Enrichment programme.

Guest speakers are often invited into Travel and Tourism classes to impart their career experiences. This includes British Airways Cabin Crew, Travel Agents, Resort Representatives plus many more.

Enrichment & Employability

You’ll complete a mandatory one week work placement, within the hospitality and tourism industry, you will also have the opportunity to take part in a range of employability focussed trips and visits, including; Manchester Airport, Cabin Crew Training, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and local hotels. 

Alongside this, you’ll be able to learn from the wide range of industry based experience from your tutors, and through their industry links, will take part in guest speaker sessions by;

  • Worldwide Cruise Employees
  • Airport Passenger Services Agents
