This Level 2 Barbering programme will prepare you with skills and knowledge for the next step into working in the Barbering industry by gaining professional skills in modern barbering techniques.

What will I study?

The course will cover mandatory generic and technical units plus optional units which you will be guided on. Mandatory units include:

  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Promote products and services to clients in a salon
  • Cut mens' hair and facial hair
  • Styling mens' hair
  • Creating an image based on a theme within the Hair & Beauty sector
  • Displaying stock to promote sales
  • Reception duties
  • Health & Safety
  • Colour Men's Hair
  • Shampoo and Condition
  • Working in the Industry
Entry Requirements

For students leaving school you will need a suitable reference from your tutor, evidence of good attendance and punctuality and a commitment to succeed. For mature learners (19+) you will need to display commitment to learn and achieve.


How will I be assessed?

Practical assessments on models will be graded as Pass, Credit or Distinction. Theory assessments can consist of online or paper based testing and assignments.

What can I do next?

You will be able to progress onto a Level 3 Diploma, an apprenticeship or industry.

Based in the Elizabeth Building within our £65 million campus, our salons are equipped to the highest industry standards. We have our very own commercial Spa Academy Hair and Beauty studios, including a spa, five hairdressing salons, a specialist barbering salon, a nail room, four beauty therapy studios and a media make up studio.

Enrichment & Employability

Every year, our hair & beauty students compete in Regional and National competitions such as the annual Association of Hairdressers and Therapists, The National Hair Federation Competition and Skills Olympics.

We also take our students to regular external events such as trade exhibitions, fairs and seminars, and trips to Wella, Illamasqua and Dennis Williams, to enhance their knowledge and learning experience.

To help our students learn about working in the industry, we host an annual industrial week where a number of employers and manufacturers such as Dermalogica, Jane Iredale and NSI come in to college to teach extra-curricular skills and provide advice on how to gain employment or progress to the next stage of your career. Many of these employers also offer work placements and voluntary opportunities, to help our students become ready for the workplace.

In additional to this, students also have the opportunity to take part in community events at schools, community centres and charity events which builds confidence, skills and enhances your CV.

Many of our students have gone on to own their own salons and you can even progress onto higher education following your studies.
