The Level 2 Certificate in Fashion, awarded by City & Guilds, is for learners who want to advance their practical skills in fashion design and construction.
It is a largely practical course which gives opportunity to develop and practise the creative skills required to progress in the Fashion sector. The assignments covered focus on building a set of practical sewing skills, the use of industrial sewing machines, pattern cutting and garment construction and well as developing creativity.
This course allows adult learners to study on a part time basis, attending one day a week during the day so it can be accommodated alongside employment, childcare and other commitments. It might be of particular interest to those wanting a career change or those just wanting to experience something different and enhance their practical and creative skills. There is a greater level of challenge on this course, it is suitable for those who have achieved a level 1 qualification or who have some experience of fashion and garment construction.
- What will I study?
The course is made up of 4 units and focuses on developing the necessary skills and knowledge to design and construct advanced fashion garments. Learners are given practical tuition on the use of domestic and industrial sewing machines and other industrial equipment. The projects on the course cover; exploring design ideas and sampling fashion techniques. Learners will learn how to use all of these elements to make a dress and a pair of unlined trousers. You will produce a portfolio which will support your progression at job interviews and / or further study.
Adult learners will benefit from teaching and guidance from experienced staff who have good links to the local creative industries and all will benefit from learning skills to support employment in the fashion industry.
You will be based in the £18.3 million Beacon Centre. In order for you to flourish in the creative field we have invested in excellent facilities such as Apple Mac design suites, spacious studios, industrial sewing machines, screen printing and weaving equipment and our very own in house photography studio and infinity curve as well as workshop spaces for print, 3D construction, pottery and plaster.
- Entry Requirements
Learners should have achieved a level 1 qualification in fashion / sewing or related course, or should have prior experience of garment construction. Learners will also require a basic knowledge of written English as well as a commitment to achieving the qualification.
- How will I be assessed?
In this qualification learners engage with study through project work, building a portfolio of practical samples as well as a producing 2 final garments. Development is progressive taking learners through a series of practical workshops and assignments where they will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the subject as well as their practical skills.
- What can I do next?
On completion of this qualification learners can progress to:
- UAL Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design (Fashion, Textiles & Design pathway)
- Level 3 UAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design
- Level 2 Apprenticeship in Textiles or Apparel
