Suzanne Tyrrell

I have had a 30-year career, both in the class room and also as a practitioner in a range of organisations, in management and in particular in Human Resource Management. I have delivered to large audiences such as the CIPD national conference and supported smaller groups and individuals through my work with psychometrics and coaching and mentoring.

I strongly believe that learning should be seen as a continuous process, not just something that happens in the class room. The development of students in their careers is my top priority and they are treated as individuals with many conflicting and competing demands on their time and I value the journey we take together.

Recent Research Projects

As part of my activities in the local branch of the CMI I was invited to contribute to a review workshop titled ‘21st Century Leaders reshaping Business and Management Studies’ (a joint venture of the CMI, ABS and QAA). This involved a number of meetings and submissions to develop a shared vision for a curriculum for business and management taught by business schools in the UK.

As a Fellow of the HEA I have contributed to a Pilot Scheme for External Examiners offered by the Higher Education Academy which aimed to provide an excellent understanding of the role of the external examiner as articulated in the UK Quality Code for Higher Education and developed a deeper understanding of the nature of academic standards and professional judgement and the enhancement of student learning. The programme is now offered by the HEA as an on-line development programme.

Industry Experience

I have previously worked in a variety of organisations, large and small while developing my career in Human Resource Management. After leaving University I started my career in the Market Room of an Edible Oil Producer in Hull and moved on to set up the first UK office for the Liebherr Group in Leeds while continuing with my studies for CIPD membership. I worked for an international accounting and consulting group and ultimately as Head of Personnel and Development for one of the largest legal practices in the UK before moving into teaching.
