Mary Devers - Currently studying FdA Criminology and Criminal Justice

  • Studied: FdA Criminology and Criminal Justice

“After leaving education at 18 and raising a family I decided now was the time to pursue my dream career doing something that I was really passionate about and helping people turn their lives around.

“I enrolled onto the FdA Criminology and Criminal Justice degree having looked at the diverse career options you can pursue upon completion.  I had no idea I would be able to start my dream career whilst still in my first year of study!  The tutor’s arranged for a variety of organisations to come into class to guest lecture and offer voluntary Work Placement opportunities and when Shelter came in I applied and was successful in securing a role as a Volunteer Mentoring Officer.

“After completing six months in this Work Placement I was encouraged to apply for a full time paid Mentoring officer role and I got the job!  This was a massively proud moment for me and my family.  Due to the flexibility of my degree programme I was able to accept the role to work full time and still complete my degree by completing by attending lessons in the evening.”

“If anyone is considering returning to education I would say go for it, it is the best decision I have ever made, yes it is challenging but it is really worth it and you are never too old to change your career! “
