Celebrating GCSE Results Day at Blackburn College

Blackburn College students are all smiles after picking up their GCSE results this morning, after months of preparation and hard work across a number of subjects including Maths and English, Italian and Spanish.

A new GCSE classification system has been applied to the majority of GCSE examinations taken this academic year, with 9 being the highest mark and an equivalent to A* and 1 being the lowest. A mark of 4 is equivalent to a C and the lowest pass.

Sam Webster (18) achieved 8 in GCSE English and 4 in GCSE Maths.

Sam said: “I feel really happy and relieved about my GCSE results. Taking GCSE Maths and English has been a stepping stone for me and will enable me to progress onto the next level at Blackburn College.”

“I was home schooled by my Dad for five years - coming to Blackburn College was a big change but my tutors have been so supportive and provided me with enough encouragement to help make that change enjoyable.”

“I have really enjoyed completing the Level 2 UAL Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology programme at Blackburn College and am looking forward to continuing to Level 3 Extended Diploma (UAL) Game Art and Concepts. In the future, I would like to become a 3D Animator Model.”

Sam added: “I would definitely recommend studying at Blackburn College – you won’t regret coming here.”

Judith Addison (69) achieved A* in GCSE Italian, fulfilling a lifelong ambition to study Italian.

Judith said: “I am absolutely delighted to have achieved an A*and thoroughly enjoyed the course at Blackburn College.

“I believe that it is so important to keep your mind active and learning a new language has been a fantastic way of keeping my brain challenged and stimulated.

“Before working for Hyndburn Borough Council, I gained a degree in French and Latin from the University of Leeds so have always had an aptitude for languages. I initially enrolled on the Beginners Italian evening class at Blackburn College and was encouraged to move on to the next level and study for GCSE Italian.

Judith added: “My tutor at Blackburn College went out of her way to boost my confidence and show me that I could go on to achieve a GCSE in Italian. It has been a challenge and I have worked very hard - to achieve such a fantastic mark is wonderful.

“I would definitely encourage others to embark on a new challenge. Not only have I achieved another qualification, I have also developed ambitions to pursue further courses in Italian and intend to enrol on the next level which is equivalent to A Level.”

Jamil Basir (51) achieved a grade 7 in GCSE Maths.

Jamil said: “I am so happy to have achieved the equivalent of an A in my GCSE Maths. I am originally from Libya and wanted to achieve a British qualification which would help with confidence and improve my language skills.”

“I have an MBA in Business and a degree in Civil Engineering from my home town in Libya – I am hoping that achieving a British GCSE will help when I am applying for Civil Engineering jobs within the UK. Coming back to College as a mature student has been a really positive experience and has brought back many memories of studying as a young man in Libya.”

“I feel it is very important to embrace British culture and learn new skills. Both my son and daughter have studied at Blackburn College – Faras my son, is in his second year at the University of Salford studying MEng (Hons) Civil and Architectural Engineering and Rawsi my daughter, is going to Manchester Metropolitan University in September to start BA (Hons) Business Management.”

“Studying at Blackburn College has been a fantastic way of meeting new people, especially from different countries such as Poland, Afghanistan and Romania. The teachers are very supportive and work at your own pace – I would definitely recommend studying at Blackburn College.”
