Funding boost for adult learners at Blackburn College
Funding opportunities have been enhanced for adult learners at Blackburn College with the launch of a new Government support package aimed at enabling adults who work to study for free.
Traditionally, funding support was only available to adult learners who were in receipt of benefits but the increase in funding flexibility means that from the 1st August 2018, adult learners in employment can now apply for full funding packages as long as their annual income does not exceed £15,736.50.
The radical, one-year trial will offer further education opportunities to a much wider section of society allowing full funding packages to those who receive jobseeker’s allowance; those in receipt of national insurance credits; employment and support allowances and those who are engaged in a work-related activity.
Blackburn College offer a number of courses appropriate for adult learners that are covered by this new rule, including ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Entry Level, Level 1 and 2 Technical courses.
Wesley Beswick (32) enrolled on the Level 2 Auto Electric Specialist programme at Blackburn College after suffering an injury at work whilst working as a Medical Oxygen Engineer.
Wesley said: “This funding boost is a fantastic way of allowing people to better themselves and will undoubtedly help those who want to gain a new qualification but still have to work to support a young family - I think it is a fantastic idea.
“Changing careers was a big decision to make but I realised that I wanted to achieve a further qualification and set up my own Auto Electrical business – I would definitely recommend making the change and studying at Blackburn College.”
Jolanta Gluchowska (37) moved to the UK from Poland and enrolled on the Entry Level ESOL course at Blackburn College in order to improve her English skills.
Jolanta said: “I studied the Entry Level ESOL course and found it so beneficial that I progressed onto Level 1 and 2. Studying really helped improve my English skills and increased my confidence. It is because of these courses that I am now able to study for a Foundation Degree in Business at the University Centre at Blackburn College.”
