Link with Local Employers pays off for Laurence
Laurence Gray completed his Creative Media Production Level 3 Extended Diploma with a Distinction grade and credits his ever-growing media production skill repertoire to Blackburn College’s relationships with top local employers.
The collaboration between Bigtank Video Productions and Blackburn College meant that Laurence was able to benefit from an exclusive work placement programme that saw the former St Augustine’s RC High School pupil participate in live briefs with real clients to develop real-world skills.
Laurence said: “Studying Creative Media Production was a great experience – Graham, Richard, Brian, Leanne and the team were all fantastic to me and always super helpful in ensuring I succeeded in my studies. Blackburn College’s relationship with Bigtank Video Productions meant that I could witness first-hand what the industry is really like by going on work placements.”
Bigtank Video Productions is a company based in Lancashire and one of the UK’s leading corporate video production companies. Clare Waterfall, Production Manager at Bigtank said:
“To get on the first rung on the ladder in Media you really have to stand out from the crowd. Even just getting a work placement is a big step as there is so much competition.”
Laurence added: “Since finishing my course, I’ve stayed in contact with Bigtank and they’ve been brilliant at providing me with opportunities to take part in shoots – which is really helping me to develop my repertoire of skills. Having the opportunity to work within industry following the Level 3 qualification means I’m in a really good place right now. My aim right now is to keep developing myself professionally.”
Since leaving Blackburn College, Laurence’s relationship with Bigtank has gone from strength-to-strength, where he regularly accompanies the film crew on location or in the office to support with editing. Clare added:
“We’ve found Laurence very useful and where possible we are using him as a paid part of the crew. His creative and practical understanding attained through his studies as well as his technical knowledge from his outside interests makes him an attractive prospect for employers. Going forward, we will be offering more work experience to Blackburn College students.”
