Extraordinary Journey for Former Blackburn College Business Student Alex Mason

Extraordinary Journey for Former Blackburn College Business Student Alex MasonFormer Blackburn College Level 3 Business with Law student Alex Mason is thriving through working in Paris and pursuing a PhD.

Alex, who left Blackburn College in 2014, currently works as Head of Outreach for the International Development Research Network in the French capital city, where his main responsibilities are managing both quantitative and qualitative research projects and liaising with ‘think tanks’ and foundations from all over the world.

In between studying at the College and working in France, Alex graduated with First Class Honours in BA (Hons) Communications and Global Studies at Nottingham Trent University, before receiving a scholarship to study his Masters in International Relations at the University of Sheffield.

He then worked in local Government for 12 months as an Economic Policy Researcher before crossing the channel to Paris in April 2020.

Alex, 29 from Leigh, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent at Blackburn College. I started at the age of 22, so I felt a bit older than other students, but this didn’t stop me making friends with both students and staff! The whole department felt like a family and it was easy to express yourself both in class and in the library with everyone being so kind and friendly.

“The course was great and the resources available allowed me to progress on to University. I remember there was so much support from staff when starting the UCAS application process. Overall, Blackburn College was an amazing experience and one which will stay with me forever.

“As well as working in Paris, I am also pursuing a PhD which explores the motivations of Foreign Aid from the United Kingdom, United States and European Union between 1990 to 2020. My main aim is to help build a bridge between Policy and Academia in the field of International Development.”

During the 2019/2020 academic year, Blackburn College celebrated an overall 90% Pass Rate across all Further Education courses. To find more information about Business courses at Blackburn College, and to apply now ahead of your September 2021 start, please visit
