College Sponsors Awards Dinner Celebrating a United Community

Community workers and volunteers were honoured at the One Voice Community Champion Awards. The awards were held as part of the One Voice Annual Dinner at the Windsor Suite, King George’s Hall.

The One Voice Annual Dinner was sponsored and supported by Blackburn College and saw some of the best work in the community celebrated with a number of awards presented on the evening.

Blackburn College Principal and Chief Executive Dr Fazal Dad was in attendance to deliver a keynote and present the College-sponsored award for Young Person of the Year to winner Umaimah Jalgonkar.

Fazal said: “Blackburn College’s mission is to transform students’ lives and our community, through outstanding education, training and support. Our vision is to aspire, innovate and achieve together, across our community.

"The word community is of critical importance here and it appears there is great synergy between the values of Blackburn College and One Voice – whose mission is to create an inclusive, cohesive and vibrant community in Blackburn with Darwen."

Umaimah is currently the Lead of a Girl’s Youth Forum at IMO (Inspire Motivate Overcome). She has also hosted the first Junior Citizen Awards ceremony where over 600 children took part along with their families and schoolteachers. She was also chosen to represent IMO on the BBC Children In Need live broadcast. Recently Umaimah helped establish Saliheen Scouts, a new Beavers Group in her local area.

Umaimah said, “I just want to say a big thank you to all the organisations who have nominated me for my award, especially IMO who have inspired me to be a future leader of tomorrow.”

Blackburn College has collaborated with One Voice on a number of projects since the community group launched in 2011 and the partnership between the organisations continues to go from strength to strength.

With the help of Future U, Blackburn College is hosting a one-of-a-kind Open Day experience for West End Girls and East End Boys on Sunday 29th March 2020 from 1pm-4pm. To take part in the day and reserve your place, please contact One Voice on 01254 676193 or at info@onevoicenetwork.org.uk
