Art and Design Students Create Masks for Confessional Music and Arts Festival

Art and Design Students Create Masks for Confessional Music and Arts FestivalLevel 3 Art and Design students at Blackburn College have been busy during lockdown creating themed masks for the Confessional Music and Arts Festival.

The project was a live brief for the festival and, amongst other pieces, the learners created Alice in Wonderland inspired masks.

Darwen’s Faith Cave, Great Harwood’s Tom Taylor and Chorley’s Holly Baxendale are some of the students who were involved in the programme.

Faith (16), who attended Darwen Aldridge Community Academy, said: I found this project really fun, as I was able to experiment with a lot of new techniques and I was able to let my creativity run free. Once the mask was complete I felt really proud as I could look at it and see how all the things I was scared to do beforehand turned out so well!”

Tom, 16, said: Making the masks in lockdown was interesting to me. While not having the best materials to develop them it really showed how we can improvise and overcome problems which is a good skill to have for life – it was also enjoyable.”

Holly (16), who attended St Michael’s Church of England High School, said: It really made me think outside the box since we weren’t in College and it also allowed me to embrace something I hadn’t done before.”

Pete Eastwood, Director of the Confessional Music and Arts Festival, said: “Having worked with Anna Ashworth’s (Blackburn College tutor) very talented Art class before, we were excited to have them involved in our event again. When we finally saw the absolutely wonderful masks that they have produced for the festival both myself and my team were blown away by the standard and creativity of the artwork completed.

am ultra fussy on standards for the event but will be delighted to use and showcase the talents of this group at our Confessional.”
