Great Harwood’s Melissa Fronts Blackburn University Centre TV AdvertGreat Harwood graduate Melissa McConnell plays a starring role in Blackburn University Centre’s new Reinvent Yourself television advert.

Melissa studied BSc (Hons) Psychology at Blackburn University Centre and now works in the community as part of the Local Government – Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

She shared her positive experience and journey at Blackburn University Centre to encourage potential students to retrain at the Higher Education provider and ‘reinvent themselves’.

Melissa, 34, said: “When I decided to retrain I sat down with my Volunteers Coordinator and set out a five-year plan – what do I want to do and where do I want to be in five years. At Blackburn College I did my GCSEs, Level 3, Access to HE: Social Sciences and my degree at Blackburn University Centre.

“I knew how passionate the lecturers were about the applied aspect of Psychology – adapting it to the context of everyday life is what appealed the most to me. I also knew that the University Centre had small class sizes so I could get the most out of my tutors.”

She added: “I always knew I wanted to retrain to provide a better life for my children and to be a positive role model for them once they were a bit older. After completing my degree at Blackburn University Centre, I was able to gain my dream job working for Local Government.

“When they called me back after my job interview I was a bit shocked at first, I was in my garden and looked up to the sky and thought there could be some bad news on the way. Obviously, they offered me the job and I cried! She asked if I was okay and I explained that I was just really happy!”
