Blackburn College student has sights on success after landing a place at top art university

A Blackburn College student is celebrating after being offered a place at one of the UK’s most prestigious universities to study art.

Jacob Andrews, 19, from Bolton is due to head to Goldsmiths University of London, which counts Damien Hurst, Antony Gormley, Damon Albarn and Steve McQueen among its famous alumni.

The former Turton Sixth Form pupil, who has just completed the UAL Foundation in Art & Design, has been showcasing his work at Blackburn College’s FE Art and Design Show which showcases the final project work of students studying Creative Art courses at the College.

The show, which is being run until 6th July at Blackburn College’s Beacon Centre, was launched by Blackburn College Principal and Chief Executive Dr Fazal Dad and Jenny Rutter, Chair of Creative Lancashire and Director of the British Textile Biennial and Super Slow Way.

Jacob said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have been offered a place at Goldsmiths University of London to study a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. The university has a great reputation for the arts and has many famous alumni. I feel incredibly proud to study where the likes of Antony Gormley and Damien Hurst studied.

“It’s been great to exhibit my final project work at the FE Art and Design Show. My final project work is about personal identity and discovery, looking at my surroundings and where I belong. I created a realistic photo painting of Blackburn, something that I’ve wanted to do for a long while, and I also made a short video showing the sense of community.

“I came to study here as I saw the course content was amazing, it had excellent facilities; much better than anywhere else I looked at.

“I feel like I’m treated more maturely here because I’m in a space full of professionals. I would say that if you want a career in the arts then I’d definitely recommend coming to Blackburn College. The Creative Arts courses are really highly rated, and I understand why. The facilities are fantastic, and the tutors are brilliant.”
