BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Entry
Since finishing my degree, I am now on a three-year graduate scheme working for MWH Treatment – a sector leading solution provider that operates across the UK water industry. The scheme is great because it allows me to touch all facets of the business, including design and procurement and will enable me to progress my professional career fully.
"Prior to studying at the University Centre at Blackburn College I was working as a bricklayer and to be honest, never really thought I was that much of an academic. However, I decided I wanted to change my future and chose to study at the University Centre at Blackburn College. It was a great choice because it was local to me and with degrees awarded by Lancaster University – in the UK Top 10, I could get a top degree without travelling for hours!"
"I applied and started my educational journey and received amazing support from my tutors from day one. My Advanced Project, a fully functioning Archimedes Screw Generator, was a key moment for me on my course because while it was a mammoth task, it was made easier with great support from my tutors. At times I felt as if I was out of my depth, but with the support that you get at the University Centre, you feel more confident and capable - even when the challenges are sizeable! My tutors were also great at giving me constructive feedback on assignments and the out of class group tutoring was also a big benefit."
"Another key benefit and something I felt supported my learning, was the external ambassador sessions we received. We were lucky enough to visit places like Heysham Nuclear Power Station and the Daff Lorries factory production line to experience the power and engineering industries up close, which I felt really helped me apply learning to the real world and secured my interest in power and utilities."
"Coming out with a First- Class Honours degree was something I could never have imagined – especially considering I started on Foundation Entry. When I came back to education I did not think it would be possible, but here I am having achieved a First, which has made me feel proud and it has given me the confidence to develop my skills and knowledge further."

"My next challenge is to become chartered because it is recognised within the industry and provides even more job opportunities. I am aiming to do it in four years too! Usually it takes five to six years but I feel more confident now and with a lot of hard work I know I can do it."
